CIS and EurAsEC summits kick off in Bishkek

Summits of the CIS Council of the Heads of State and the Interstate Council of the Eurasian Economic Community started in Bishkek on Friday morning, October 10, 2008. Presidents of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan have arrived in Bishkek to partake in the events. The summits are also attended by Azerbaijan and Ukraine delegations.

In course of the summit CIS leaders will consider 21 documents, while the agenda is topped by the issue of CIS Economic Development Strategy trough 2020. In particular, the summits' agenda includes the discussion of the draft CIS Economic Development Strategy through 2020, the issue of defining energy cooperation as the key area of collaboration between the CIS member-states in 2009, the plan of major events on the celebrations of the 65th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War1941-1945.

The Commonwealth strengthening as an international organization will be also high on the agenda of the session. The EurAsEC summit will focus on the results of the implementation of the agreements and priority areas of the activity for the near future.

The summiteers are supposed to consider the report of the EurAsEC Secretary General on the Customs Union and the Single Economic Space registration within the Commonwealth, the issue of giving the Eurasian Bank for Development a status of an observer in the EurAsEC and the draft EurAsEC budget 2009. The summiteers will discuss draft events 2008-2010 on the implementation of the priority areas in the EurAsEC development. The document includes the unperformed events of 2003-2007 on the development of the energy market and transport union cooperation in the real sector of the economy, food safety, cooperation in the socio-humanitarian, ecological areas, the migration policy, the EurAsEC management system improvement.

Kyrgyz, Russian leaders talk about investments and economic cooperation

Presidents of Kyrgyzstan and Russia will pay close attention to potential investments and widening of economic cooperation between the two countries, Kyrgyz presidential press service reported in view of official visit of the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to Kyrgyzstan.

The Russian delegation arrived in Bishkek today consists of leadership of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Defense Ministry, Transport Ministry, Economic Development Ministry, OJSC Gazprom head and some other officials.

The two presidents will discuss the progress of interaction in the political, economic, humanitarian, military and military-technical spheres, as well as in the regional and international problems. The visit of Medvedev is expected to result into a bilateral regulation. The parties also intend to ink a joint protocol between the Russian Customs Service and Kyrgyz State Customs Committee on mutual information exchange management and costumes paper work simplification.

Among other documents to be signed in the course of the Russian president's visit to Kyrgyzstan are protocol of amendments to the Kyrgyz-Russian Decree on trade representations as of October 8, 1992 and cooperation programs to be implemented by the foreign ministries of the two countries in 2009. Besides, the parties will consider potential cooperation in power energy and oil and gas branches of industry.

CIS is real political mechanism still, Bakiev says

"It is obvious that Commonwealth of Independent States is still a real political mechanism despite any pessimistic tendencies and all member states are interested in its successful development," the President of Kyrgyzstan Kurmanbek Bakiev said during the meeting of CIS Foreign Ministers Council on Thursday in Bishkek.

Summarizing results of the work has done, Bakiev noted that 2008 was marked with search of consolidation solution of many issues, including the main one - CIS Development Strategy till 2020. The president has also mentioned importance of CIS joint energy projects’ implementation.
